While pursuing his MBA at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Greg Carter was involved in a project to commercialize a small business VoIP phone system as part of the “New Venture Challenge” Class. For this class, the UAH Office of Technology Commercialization solicited the business community around Huntsville for technology (Intellectual Property) that the companies owned, but did not want to commercialize. The project was to develop a business plan for a small VoIP telephone system that would target small businesses with fewer than 20 employees.
Mark Spencer, the founder of Digium, provided the system they would use for the project. While Digium had developed the system with intent to commercialize it, they shifted direction after acquiring another company named Switchvox. This acquisition yielded them a series of larger VoIP telephone systems that Switchvox had designed and built. These larger systems were better aligned with Digium’s target market so the small VoIP phone system was no longer fit in their business strategy. Mark and Digium agreed to license the product for commercialization and once the class was over the group was offered the opportunity to continue the project.
Greg Carter continued the project and partnered with Melania Stewart, a friend and software engineer. They incorporated in Huntsville Alabama, in November of 2011, as Synergia Communications, Inc. Within a year of incorporation they had secured a license with Digium for both the hardware and software for the phone system. For the next 3 years Greg and Melania, redesigned and tested the system, talked with business owners and their employees, and refined their value offering to align with the needs of small businesses.
The initial product, the Synergia Communications i1, was released in October, 2015. The objective during all of development was to provide a professional business telephone system that is intuitive enough to remove the need for user training, and to provide a complete solution for Businesses. The features ranged from the professionally recorded menu prompts, to VoIP telephone service and full support. Everything is designed to minimize our customer’s time taken away from their business.
